Chinese magazine City Views featured Skinny laMinx in an article that looks at the ways in which designers are utilising their Instagram accounts.
Below are the questions that I answered should you be interested in reading them
Could you please share with us your inspiration and idea of these marvelous designs?
Many of my screenprinted fabric designs are first made as paper cuts or line drawings. I love to draw, and I love using a very sharp knife to cut paper. I am inspired by very ordinary things, like my teacups at home, the holes in a piece of cheese, or the shadows of glassware in a cabinet.
(I will send examples of how photos I took turned into sketches/papercuts and eventually fabric designs)
When did you start to use Instagram?
I got a Samsung Galaxy S3 in July last year, and was so happy because Android users were finally able to use Instagram!
Have you counted that how many fans purchase your works after “Like” your posts on instagram?
I haven’t done that! I don’t really think of Instagram as a way of selling things, but rather as a way of connecting with people who like the things I design. I use Instagram as a kind of ‘micro-blog’ where I can share what I am doing in my studio, what I have seen on the streets in Cape Town, and also the things I have in my shop for sale.
I think people like to know what is going on behind the scenes of a brand. Also, my designs are inspired by everyday life, so photos of things I see are very relevant to my work as a designer.
I found that you post your excellent photos on instagram everyday to share with fans，so is Instagram the most frequent social channel in your dailylife now?Which feature of Instagram attracts you to check it everyday.
Instagram is the most frequent social media channel I use, but I also post on Facebook daily, write a post for my blog (www.skinnylaminx.com/blog) about three times a week, and I use Twitter and Flickr too.
I like Instagram, because it gives me a little window into the life of other people whose work or vision of life I enjoy, and I like opening that window into my life for the people who follow me on Instagram. I think it is a fun and generous social media channel. I also like taking the time to photograph the things that catch my eye.
Which aspect of Instagram attracts you to use it: Filter functioning or Social functioning.
Although I mostly post photographs that are related to my work as a designer (rather than my social life), I think I use Instagram in a social way.
Compared to other channels of promotion like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr, what do you think are the advantages of using Instagram to show your work of design?
I have found it interesting that a lot of people following me on Instagram are from Japan, South Korea… and China! I think that because Instagram is about images and not words, it is a great way to introduce people who don’t read English to Skinny laMinx.
